How to start a trash can cleaning business
If you’re considering starting a trash can cleaning business, you might have unrealistic expectations about the potential earnings. Making $10,000 a month isn’t impossible, but it requires the right approach and equipment. After over a year in this industry, I’ve learned exactly what you need to maintain a successful business without overspending.
The Right Equipment
Pressure Washer
First off, let’s talk about pressure washers. You’ll find a wide range of brands, from electric to gas-powered models. Personally, I use an RY1900 electric pressure washer. It’s easy to store, generates more than enough pressure for my needs, and eliminates the hassle of dealing with gas. Using an electric model means I can conveniently leave an extension cord in my vehicle and set up without a hitch.
One of the biggest advantages? An electric washer won’t damage the trash cans like higher-pressure gas models can, which can tear up the bottoms and necessitate replacements.
Chemicals and Sprayer
I rely on just a few essential chemicals for my cleaning process. You’ll need:
- Two-Gallon Sprayer: This is perfect for mixing enough solution without needing to refill for every job. It allows for easy application.
- Zep Industrial Degreaser: I’ve found this degreaser effective, but there are plenty of options available. It’s about finding what works best for you.
- 90C Outdoor Bleach: This bleach has worked well for me, helping to cut through the grime in trash cans.
Cleaning Process
After applying your chemicals, let them sit for a bit, then rinse everything off. Here’s where a foam cannon comes in. Mix Turtle Wax spray in the cannon and cover the trash can in foam. Let it sit for about a minute to break down dirt and odors, leaving your cans smelling fresh.
Finishing Touch
For the final step, pour Fabuloso directly into the cleaned trash can. No need for a sprayer here! Just let it sit with the lid closed to help the scent permeate.
Building Your Business
All this equipment and technique is effective without breaking the bank. While you could invest in expensive trailers and high-end gear, it’s not necessary to get started. Many aspiring entrepreneurs struggle to land their first customers, but I developed a lead strategy that helped me secure my initial $10,000 in jobs.
